Rate Requests

The IAM is considering building a simple Rate Request and Rate Response functionality into the IAM Online Directory.  This would allow registered users to build a rate request using a standard form online.  The user could search IAMX for qualified service partners and efficiently send the request to several partners at once.

Users would be alerted to a quotation opportunity by e-mail.  Clicking on the link in the e-mail would provide them a rate response form which could be submitted directly to the requester.

How many of you routinely send competitive rate requests daily to service partners?

Would such an online function be of interest to you?

Would you be interested in participating in a trial of the Beta System before general release?

    Best regards,

    Dear Ray,

As far as destination rate quotes are concerned, we've started to use the MATT quoting system. Its automated, so requests will be answered instantly. This works with most of normal household goods moves, saving us a lot of time. Of course, we can deliver special rates for special requests, if asked directly.

Thanks and that's great.  It's all about improving the efficiency.  Would it help to have a link in the IAMX directory search listings for companies that have rates in MATT and Pricepoint, etc.?

Ray, I think this could be a very useful tool.

I send rate requests (and use the online directory) on a daily basis.

I would be interested in testing it out too.

My only suggestion would be making it available to only IAM members, or even only to validated members (but definitely not providing that capability as free for non-members).

    Hi,

Thank you for your comment and willingness to participate in the development and trial.  We appreciate that and thank you for using the online directory, too.  Let us know how we can make it more useful in your daily work.

As to restricting the usage to only IAM Members or only to Validated Members, may I suggest that we can revisit this question of restriction after we gain some experience.  In some ways, do we not want rate requests from everyone?  And when we are searching for a partner, shouldn't the user be able to make the determination of who to include based on their qualifications.  IAM is a very important qualification and Validation is another important one.  But there some areas of the world where there are no Validated members yet and in some locations no IAM members yet.

May I suggest a more inclusive approach first and let's revisit this issue when we have some experience?  Also keep in mind that the IAMX directory only shows IAM members by default.  It also prioritizes Validated members to the top of the search.  So IAM members and Validated members are certainly in a preferred status.

    Best,

    Ray

We must protect the value of IAM membership to IAM members.

By providing lists of Non IAM members in area's where an IAM member exists deteriorates the value of IAM membership to that company.

IAM should encourage IAM members to deal only with IAM members & discourage the use of non IAM members.

Access to directories of non IAM members should be discouraged

With reference to an IAM  Rates Portal, that is a great idea and should be available only to  IAM members to use ... again adding value to the IAM membership. Agents who choose not to join, or do not qualify should not be rewarded by the resources of other IAM members and tools.

    Hi Leonard,

Thank you very much for your comments.  I believe that the IAM is very much in agreement with you in protecting the value of IAM membership and returning value to its members.  Yours is a legitimate viewpoint and I believe, that in the end, the membership will guide the IAM in how the directory will ultimately best serve its members.

As with many issues, there are differing points of view.  My belief is that IAM members would definitely prefer to do business with other IAM members.  The RPP is a good example of the benefits of such cooperation.  I also believe that IAM members work in a world where they have to cooperate and collaborate with many different service partners. Some, like furniture restoration companies are not yet members but the IAM is looking for ways to encourage their membership.  Some smaller movers are not IAM members yet but they offer high quality services and also place business with IAM members.  The IAM  is looking for ways to encourage them to join as well.

The default view in any search in IAMX only displays IAM members.  A user has to make a conscious decision to click an icon to display non IAM members.  Most do not.  In some countries where there are no members or with some service lines where IAM membership has not taken hold yet, I believe it is a reasonable service to IAM members to show these non members.  We can ignore the fact that IAM members work outside of IAM membership or we can try to be inclusive, show the advantages of membership and encourage them to join the group.

The great thing about the IAM is that the barrier to membership is relatively low.  This already makes the IAM much more inclusive than some other organizations.  Should well established companies that have invested in infrastructure and staffing have an opportunity to highlight their differentiation through a Validation program?  I believe it makes sense.  We are inclusive but provide a mechanism to differentiate those that are willing to validate their credentials.  Some companies have extensive credentials and are proud of their green validated check marks.  Some have one or just a few but have still taken the time to validate these.

Of course, these are just one person's opinions.  I know that there are IAM members that support your position and I also know some that support mine.  In the end, the association serves the membership.  If enough feel that the IAM should adopt a more protectionist position, I am sure that those voices will be heard.  I encourage to you continue to debate and voice our opinion.  There are committees that you can volunteer for so that you can help drive positive changes for the benefit of the membership, too.

    All the best Leonard,

Interesting idea. Since you are looking for feedback, i'am happy to oblige. We still send rate requests daily to our partners to get actual rates for actual moves we are quoting on. A standard format would be useful. We have one built into our Agent Database, but its hard to get people to use it--its too complicated. I like the idea of a standard format, as some of our people don't always give the full correct information to get the best rate or POE, so standardization would be a benefit if it can be kept simple and user friendly.

We also get rate requests daily (more and more through IAMX you will be happy to note). So yes, this is a daily activity and anything to make it simpler, better and more organized is good. Happy to beta test for you.

I like the idea, but have the following comment. If agents can easily ask rates to multiple agents, we might get over-loaded with rates requests. Agents might ask to 10 or even more agents for rates, increasing the work but not the real business

    Hi Michel,

Thank you for your comment and it is an excellent one.  The current design under consideration limits the selection of service partners to 3.  When a user tries to select the 4th, they will receive this error message:

(MX) Connect limits the number of service providers that can be selected for an RFQ  .We respect the effort and expense with the RFQ response and suggest careful selection of service providers using the IAMX search and filtering tools.

    What do you think?

I have some real issues with this.

First we need to ask the big question.

Is this what we want IAM to be involved in?

There are various schemes around like this and it is not hard to see downward pressure on rates could be an unintended result of the initiative.

IAM for me should continue to focus on the big issues of compliance, regulation and providing a platform to network.

Perhaps a better use of technology would be a platform to enable member agents to work together on co loading or other smart schemes that will allow profitable work to be done cleverly in an ever more complicated environment.

    Hi Phillip,

Thank you for your comments and feedback.

There are others who have stated some concerns on these developments and you can be assured that the IAM is taking all these opinions into account as they determine the direction of any future developments.  There are also many - some have even commented in this forum that requesting and responding to competitive rates is a daily activity.  They seem to welcome the capability to search and filter for relevant service providers that match their customer requirements and then efficiently send a standardized rate request.  We propose to limit the number of service partners selected for a rate opportunity to 3 so that this functionality is not used to spray the request to a large number of service partners.

We believe that the IAMX directory holds the potential to catalog useful information about service partners so that price is not a sole determinant for selection. Users can search and filter by capability, memberships, quality certifications, licenses and compliance qualifications.  We believe that the Validation program can also help to differentiate companies that have invested in service infrastructure.  In this way, hopefully the IAM will contribute to more efficient service partner selection based on best value not lowest price.

We believe the mission of the IAM is to serve its members and deliver valuable, relevant benefits to its membership. If the majority of IAM members feel that this type of functionality to enhance efficiency in their daily business activities does not make sense, we are sure that IAM will respond appropriately.

Your comments are very appreciated.  Thank you.

I agree with Philip and Michel.  Presently we are already hit by colleagues who send out circulars when requesting rates.   This does not comply with our efforts to provide top quality service at reasonable prices.  It has always been our endeavor to establish mutual business relationships with international partners who have the same philosophy, namely to provide quality service to the customers and establish a relationship of trust and dependability between us.  "Farming out" shipments to the lowest bidder is not conducive to establishing and maintaining an international network of quality agents who will also be pleased to reciprocate when the opportunity comes up.  Looks to me like two different schools of thought.

    Hi Woody,

I'm sure there are many schools of thought.  You and I have been in this game long enough and probably had some of the same teachers so I agree 110% with you.

The collaborative agent to agent environment works because we establish trusted relationships based on actual experience.  That is what makes the IAM networking environment and conference so important.  Relationships are what the business is all about.

The Rate Request is not for all member companies.  Some use automated rate systems built into their own computers, some use services like Pricepoint, MATT and others, some have automated processes which personalize their rate requests and responses.  Others rely on tariffs and agreements with trusted partners as you mention.

I'm not suggesting that using a 3 quote system should replace any of these.  In fact, in some cases that would mean taking a step backwards which we never want to do.  However, there are times when we need a service partner in a new area where don't have an established relationship.  Or we may be quoting on a new type of service which is out of the ordinary.  Perhaps in those cases, members may find it useful.

    All the best, Woody.

    I'm seconding Austen opinion.
It would be ideal if the scheme that will be agreed contains clear indications regarding NVOCC at destination as they take a lot of time to be determined.
They change quite considerably depending on:
    1. POE
    2. Carrier
    3. Terminal
    4. final destination
    5. un-stuffing
    6. Customs House where the Customs clearance is performed
    7. warehousing
In other words it is essential to know the name of the NVOCC at destination with their complete contacts or said charges should be quoted directly at origin by the local NVOCC.

    Hi Arnaldo,

Thank you so much for your suggestion.  While the current design for the first release does not envision this level of detail, it will provide a comment/messaging section that would allow for that level of clarification.

The system will be flexible enough to accommodate or require such detail in the future if the membership feels it will be useful.

    Posted 01-29-2018 14:28
    Hi Austen,

Thank you for your message. We're so pleased that companies like yours are finding the directory useful.

The point about a standardized format is an important one, Austen.  Our industry, like others, suffers from fragmentation which means that there are competing solutions provided by entrepreneurial companies to certain needs.  There are pros and cons to standardization but our world would not exist in its current state without it.

If there are numerous standards offered to and adopted by the industry, the fragmentation can lead to inefficiency as we must learn and populate various systems in order to compete.  If we can narrow the choices, then the industry can benefit from the obvious efficiency of focusing on a standard.

Mobility Exchange is a service partner to the IAM so our views are those of an independent company, not the IAM.  It is our belief that the IAM seeks to remain as neutral as possible and to offer standards and common resources which can be adopted, integrated and used by the industry ideally for the benefit of all its members.  The directory is one example of developing such a common resource.

Industry partners like software companies and companies that provide rate and pricing services are welcome to engage in discussions with the IAM about how they can use the directory as a common, standard resource to connect with IAM members.  Some would caution that this kind of approach encroaches into competition with such industry partners.  We believe that the IAM is very sensitive to this and has no  wish to compete with industry partners.

In a way, technology and the effort to leverage it for efficiency is forcing us to face some of these discussions. Take the directory, as an example.  Some software companies that are offering cloud based systems have a method of creating and offering a standardized service provider directory as part of their system.  Some larger relocation management companies who have custom systems capture service provider information including compliance and qualification data.  Does IAMX represent competition to such companies or does it offer a common resource which can help the industry improve its efficiency?

IAMX is now considering a functionality that would allow directory users to send rate requests efficiently to several service providers - searched, filtered and evaluated through IAMX.  While some view this as an efficiency enhancement, others may view this as the IAM encroaching into the space of services already being offered by industry partner members.

We believe that some developments that lead to progress are without controversy and obviously benefit the entire membership but most require careful consideration as they may not affect all members equally.  We are encouraged to see the involvement, discussion and debate by IAM members in shaping these decisions.

    Ray

    Hi Merilyn,

Thank you for your nice comment about the usefulness of the directory.  We appreciate it.

I received an unsolicited phone call this morning from an industry colleague who said that he was racking his brain trying to remember a service provider from Japan that he had met.  He recalled part of his name and was able to find him and his company using IAMX.  The contact he made resulted in a connection that  led to business.  It's so great to hear these types of comments about the use of the directory as a tool for doing business.

It also highlights the importance of making sure that your directory information is current and complete.  It's easy to Edit your listing, if you have not done so already.  How to Edit.

This encourages us to explore additional ways to provide value to the IAM membership.

    Hi Ilan,

I am not familiar with MoversPOE so I am not sure if MX Connect would be similar.

IAM's online directory, IAMX is starting to build good traffic numbers.  Our number of sessions grew by 43% from 5834 to 8381 from December to January.  Much of that growth relates to members using the search tool to identify qualified service partners.

We believe that once service partners have been identified, the next activity is related to communication with those service partners.  Aside from rate information, we believe members communicate to understand best service options, etc.  Our goal is to facilitate that communication.

There are a number of pricing solutions in the market and the IAM is reviewing the possibilities of providing simple, one click connections to those services once service providers have been identified.  Our current effort is one to facilitate sending a standardized rate request to up to 3 service providers from the IAMX search results page.

    Kind regards,

Thank you all for engaging on this thread and providing your feedback. It's discussions like this where we feel like IAM Connected provides great benefit for IAM members by discerning whether a potential change is wanted or not.

As Ray has mentioned, IAM is looking at how we can deliver more value to our members through the IAM Mobility Exchange. Rate requests is just one potential idea and your initial responses are encouraging.

IAM wants to be clear on several points though:

    1. No decision has been made on whether or not to move forward on this project. The initial idea would be to run a pilot project or beta test to see if members like yourselves find it to be a useful tool or not.
    2. Neither IAM nor Mobility Exchange LLC would collect pricing information included in the rate request unless the participant agreed to share that information.
    3. IAM won't let your company get spammed with rate requests. Limitations will be incorporated to ensure that the tool is not abused.
    4. If you want to participate, you can. If you do not want to participate, feel free to ignore it.
    5. The IAM Mobility Exchange is intended to be an open platform that can be used by IAM Members including our valued technology suppliers. In this case, IAM wants Mobility Exchange to provide Members with as much choice as possible so you can make the best decision for your businesses. In a practical sense, what does this mean? Well, there are other rate request and pricing platforms out there which can be accessible from or integrated with the IAM Mobility Exchange. If you are a customer of MATT's or Pricepoint's or MoversPOE's, you would have the freedom to request rates through those platforms as well.

We believe that the IAM Mobility Exchange can bring efficiencies to your processes by making our traditional directory a more useful and interactive medium in which to conduct business. Requesting rates and providing quotes is just one area where IAM believed these efficiencies can be realized.

Further to this discussion, I also want to address IAM's relationship with Mobility Exchange LLC. As you know, IAM launched the IAM Mobility Exchange just prior to the 2017 Annual Meeting. The IAM Mobility Exchange is the result of an exclusive arrangement and partnership between IAM and Mobility Exchange LLC where Mobility Exchange LLC provides and maintains the IAM Mobility Exchange directory. Through this partnership, IAM is now able to provide you with a far easier and more robust experience to find potential partners around the world, the new ability to display and showcase your company's hard-won credentials, and a visual interface to see exactly where IAM members are located. As a partner, Mobility Exchange LLC works closely with IAM Leadership and Staff to continually make the directory better and identify other ways we can make it more useful and valuable for the members. Just over four months in, IAM is really excited to see how well Members have responded to the new platform but we know that it can always be improved and are thankful for the feedback Members have provided since it was launched. Keep it coming so we can keep making it better!
